BCAM Wrapup
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The month-long campaign for breast cancer awareness wrapped up with a DBI celebrity endorsement. We received high praise from TV personality Padma Lakshmi on social media as she encouraged women to visit, “…a wonderful resource called @DenseBreastInfo, with all kinds of information and questions you can ask your health care provider. I encourage all women to check it out.”
Accuracy on the Internet: How You Can Help
Reminder: there are many sources of information on the internet that are neither medically sourced nor medically reviewed. We were disheartened by less-than-accurate information on the topic of breast density posted by some organizations during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We point this out to reassure you that DBI’s very hard working Medical Advisory Board is consistently engaged in reviewing all website content to ensure the information we provide always maintains the highest standard of accuracy and integrity.
- You can help slow the spread of misinformation by asking everyone in your organization to please be mindful before “liking” or “sharing” a group’s post on social media as that action could lend validation to its source. If there is uncertainty that the source ensures accurate information via medical review, “amplifying” a message may add misinformation into the public arena and ultimately be a disservice to patients seeking accurate information on which to base breast health decisions.
