Canadian Density Notification Status

Eight Canadian provinces have enacted or made a commitment to enact breast density notification, with discussions underway in multiple other provinces. See details below in the table provided by DenseBreastsCanada.ca:

British Columbia

Notification implemented Oct. 15, 2018

  • All women informed of category and risk

    Ultrasound paid by govt. for Category C and D (with a drs requisition)

Nova Scotia

 

Notification implemented Oct. 29, 2019

  • All women informed of category and risk

PEI

Notification to begin Fall 2019

  • All women informed of category and risk

    Ultrasound will be paid for by govt. for Category D 

Alberta

Working towards notification for ALL categories

  • Have mandatory reporting of density to doctor
  • Patient and physician brochures completed
  • Many clinics inform patients of density

    Ultrasound paid by govt. for Category C and D

New

Brunswick

Commitment to notification for women in ALL categories

  • All doctors are told patient’s density category

Saskatchewan

Notification implemented for only >75% density category Nov. 2018

  • Updating system; notification for all women to begin March 2021

Ontario

Notification implemented for only >75% density category 2007

  • Updating system and implementing BI-RADS; discussing how to make information available to women

Manitoba

Notification implemented for only >75% density category Jun. 2019

  • Looking into updating system and implementing BI-RADs

Quebec

Mandatory reporting to doctors

  • Some women can access density information in Health Booklet

    Ultrasound paid by govt for Cat D with family history

Newfoundland
