Can Artificial Intelligence Locate Breast Cancer Years Before Radiologists Detect It?
Artificial intelligence (AI) may identify where breast cancers will develop years before routine screening mammography detects them. In a BreastScreen Norway study, two AI models often marked the future cancer location 2 and 4 years before diagnosis, even when radiologists considered the mammograms normal or as showing only minimal, non-specific findings. However, many examinations with high AI scores would not represent cancer, raising questions about how these signals should be used.
