Insights for CBS News Feature and Research Update
CBS National News Feature:
The CBS news producer for Norah O’ Donnell reached out to DB-i late yesterday to provide information and insight for their October 31 feature on surprise medical billing for follow-up imaging after mammography screening. If you missed it, the text version of the feature can be viewed here. Although not specifically acknowledged in the news feature, DB-i was invited to provide background as experts on the topic; we look forward to future reports.
Research Update:
One of our educational goals is to provide relevant research updates to build on the body of knowledge contained on the DB-i site. A recent update was made to the Breast MRI section of the Screening Technologies tab to include the following information about results from the first round of the randomized DENSE trial, as presented at the 2019 European Congress of Radiology conference.
“In the Netherlands, results were reported for MRI in women with negative mammograms and extremely dense breasts. A total of 4,783 women had screening MRI and 79 cancers were detected” only by MRI (cancer detection rate of 16.5 per 1000). This compares to only about 5 cancers detected per 1000 women on mammography. The rate of cancers presenting as lumps in between screenings was cut in half in the women who had MRI (2.5 per 1000 vs. 5 per 1000 in the control group not having MRI).[1] ”
